Six years ago I moved to China to work full time as an ESL Teacher. I never planned to stay so long, but one year turned into two, which doubled to four… and here I am finishing up year number six!
Despite the ups and downs it’s been an overall awesome experience! When I first ventured out here at 23 – a blubbering baby flying the nest for the first time – I was the most reserved and anxious person you could ever meet.
Granted, I’m still not much of a party girl, but teaching helped me find my voice – it takes a good set of lungs to be heard in a room of squealing children! And the time spent navigating language barriers and miming for my dinner… well lets just say there is nothing like an empty stomach to help lure a hermit-crab from her shell.
And then there was the TRAVELLING! Country hopping between contracts gave me a different view of the world. It shaped me into a braver, more competent and independent person, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
However this chapter of my life is nearing its end. At the end of April 2019 I’ll be saying goodbye to China – and the stable employment to which I’ve become so accustomed – and setting off on my next adventure.
I’m packing my bag and taking to the road! And I have no idea where it’s going to lead me.
So why have I started this blog? Well, the clues in the name.
HITCH HIKING A STORY.
I want to combine my two loves of travel and writing and somehow figure out how to turn them into a career. so I’ll be taking the next 12 months to experiment with three creative outlets.
For years I’ve dabbled in writing steamy, new-adult romances and I think it’s time I did something with them.
I plan to launch the first one early this summer, so you can expect posts on how I’m figuring out little things like cover design, kindle-formatting, editing… and coming up with a good pen name, while finding writing time as I jump from place to place.
Yes, I’m also pursuing traditional publication, because why put all your eggs in one basket?
Doing a total 180 in terms of content and audience, this summer I’ll also be querying agents about my (currently half polished) Middle-Grade Fantasy. I also plan to start a YA Fantasy that has long been circling my brain, and I’ll be looking to you all to keep me accountable to my writing goals!
This year I’m looking for ways to make and save money, all while trying to accomplish my dream of creating stories while travelling the world on a budget! And I want to share everything I discover with you 🙂
Therefore anyone interested in adventuring, budgeting, making money, or just finding a better lifestyle… this is a blog for you!
So what’s first on my adventuring to do list?
Picking a destination and Finding Free Accommodation!
For that, my boyfriend and are turning to Trusted House Sitter’s. An amazing website, perfect for people who love PETS and TRAVELLING. It’s a way for people to help each other out by one party offering free accommodation in exchange for free pet care. Win win.
My boyfriend and I are both big advocates of this website. They have house sits available all over the world. Since our lifestyle doesn’t allow us to keep a pet of our own, we get our fluffy-fixes through caring for other peoples animals while they are on holiday. Membership to access the site is paid per year, but it’s such a small cost in the long run, and the money saved on hotels is monumental!
If you use this link HERE you can get 25% off your first sign up!
And that’s how things stand 🙂 Give me a shout out in the comments, or feel free to email me if you have questions about any of the things I’ve mentioned here. I’m also curious to know what sort of posts you would like to see? When it comes to travelling Asia on a budget, teaching English as a second language, or anything related to living in China, I’m pretty much an expert.
What about you? Are any of you stepping into the unknown this year? Be it a project, an adventure, or a switch in jobs or lifestyle I would love to hear about it!
Until next time.
